Top-100 Global Standing
In the latest rankings, VU has delivered an impressive performance: 79th in the 2025 U.S. News World University Rankings and 176th in the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Thirteen of its disciplines rank among the world’s top 100, with neuroscience, psychology, earth sciences, and sociology standing out in particular. As one of the Netherlands’ two major public research universities, VU, together with the University of Amsterdam, forms the backbone of the city’s academic landscape.
Flagship Programs: The Netherlands’ “Hidden Champions”
In the 2024 Dutch Higher Education Guide, seven of VU’s undergraduate programs were rated “Top Courses”: Biology, Earth Sciences, Medicine, Greek and Latin Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), Sociology, and Creative Technologies. These accolades are backed by solid teaching quality: VU has also been recognized in the Dutch government’s biennial Education Excellence Awards. Earn a Dutch university degree and secure your career
Even more noteworthy is that VU’s programs in Communication Studies, Psychology, and Computer Science consistently rank among the best in Europe, while courses such as International Business Management and International Business Law attract applicants from around the globe.
One Campus, Two Worlds
VU’s campus is unique—it is located in the Buitenveldert neighborhood in southern Amsterdam, adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district, yet retains the tranquility of an independent campus. There are no walls here, but there is a distinct sense of belonging. An American exchange student recalls: “In classes at VU, professors take us out into the community for fieldwork instead of just drawing diagrams on the blackboard.” Another international student comments: “There isn’t that competitive atmosphere focused on rankings here; they genuinely want to teach you.”
