The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is an English proficiency test designed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for non-native English speakers. It primarily assesses their ability to use English for everyday communication in international business, trade, and work environments. Unlike the TOEFL and IELTS, which focus on academic settings, the TOEIC is more closely aligned with real-world workplace scenarios, including business meetings, client communication, email correspondence, and phone calls, which is why it is also known as the “Business TOEFL.”
II. Certificate Levels and Scoring System
TOEIC certificates are categorized into five color-coded levels based on total scores, providing a clear indication of the certificate holder’s English proficiency.
| Certificate Color | Score Range | CEFR Level | Proficiency Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 860–990 points | C1–C2 | Professional-level international communication; able to participate fluently in multinational meetings and express opinions |
| Blue | 730–855 points | B2–B2+ | Advanced Business English, capable of meeting most workplace communication needs |
| Green | 470–725 points | A2–B1 | Basic level for daily communication, sufficient for routine business needs |
| Brown | 220–465 points | A1–A2 | Beginner level for basic comprehension; capable of handling limited social interactions |
| Orange | 10–215 points | <A1 | Absolute beginner level; capable only of basic daily conversations |
The Gold Certificate represents the highest honor in the TOEIC exam. Holders are recognized as possessing a level of business English proficiency approaching that of international native speakers. Since international companies often set their hiring thresholds at 600 points or higher, the Gold Certificate (860 points or higher) provides a distinct competitive advantage. III. Global Recognition and Corporate Adoption
TOEIC certificates enjoy widespread recognition. According to statistics, more than 9,000 companies worldwide recognize and use TOEIC scores as a hiring standard, with some sources indicating that up to 14,000 companies and organizations accept TOEIC test results. Each year, over 5 million people take the TOEIC exam across 150 countries.
Well-known companies that recognize TOEIC scores include multinational corporations such as Lenovo, Huawei, Microsoft, Samsung, Procter & Gamble, Intel, Deloitte, Korean Air, Toyota, and Nissan. TOEIC scores are also used in contexts such as job promotions, overseas assignments, and applications for study abroad.
IV. Test Formats and Preparation Tips
The TOEIC exam is primarily available in two formats:
- TOEIC Listening & Reading: The most common version, scored out of 990 points, consists of 100 listening questions and 100 reading questions, with a total duration of approximately 2.5 hours. This score is required for 90% of corporate recruitment and entry-level job applications for college graduates.
- TOEIC Speaking & Writing (Speaking and Writing Test): Focuses on oral expression and written communication skills, suitable for professionals who need to demonstrate their overall English proficiency.
Exam trends for 2026 indicate that the listening section will feature dialogues with a wider variety of accents, while the reading section will include scenario-based questions such as emails and instant messaging. When preparing, candidates should prioritize improving their practical application skills.
V. Certificate Validity and Digital Certificates
TOEIC score certificates are valid for two years, starting from the date of the exam. The validity period is established because language proficiency evolves with usage; an expired certificate cannot accurately reflect a test-taker’s current English proficiency.
It is worth noting that since 2021, ETS has been using blockchain technology to issue digital certificates. Test-takers can directly share their scores using a unique URL and QR code. These certificates cannot be tampered with, are easy to verify, and are more environmentally friendly. By 2025, the number of digital TOEIC certificates issued via BCdiploma had already exceeded 500,000.
