TELC stands for The European Language Certificates. The exams are developed and administered by telc GmbH, a language testing institute based in Frankfurt, Germany. Founded in 2006, the organization’s history dates back to 1968, when it conducted its first standardized German language test. Today, it has over 3,000 authorized partner institutions in more than 20 countries. Among these, the TELC Deutsch C1 Hochschule (abbreviated as TELC C1 HS) is an academic language test for admission to German universities. It is officially recognized by the German Rectors’ Conference as a valid language certificate for the admission of international students to universities throughout Germany, and its validity is equivalent to that of the TestDaF.
Exam Structure and Features
The TELC exam consists of written and oral components. The written exam primarily assesses knowledge in reading, listening, writing, and basic language skills, while the oral exam is typically conducted in pairs and evaluated jointly by two examiners. Taking the TELC C1 HS as an example, the written exam consists of a 90-minute section on reading and language fundamentals, a 40-minute listening section, and a 70-minute writing section. The oral exam lasts approximately 16 minutes (including a 20-minute preparation period), and a total score of 60% is required to pass. One of the advantages of the TELC is the option to retake individual sections. If only one of the written or oral components is passed, candidates can retake only the failed section without having to retake the entire exam, which significantly reduces stress for many test-takers.
Recognition and Certificate Validity
As of 2026, all public universities in Germany will recognize TELC C1 HS scores. Universities in the TU9 alliance, such as the Technical University of Munich and Heidelberg University, accept these scores. Over 90% of German employers also accept TELC certificates for job applications. The certificate is valid indefinitely; however, some universities or institutions may require that it be issued within the last two years. Therefore, it is best to confirm the requirements with your target institution before applying. Regarding exam fees, the cost ranges from approximately 140 to 160 euros for levels A1 to B2, and around 170 euros for the C1 level.
