The CA(SA) designation is awarded and administered by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), established in 1904. It is South Africa’s most authoritative and prestigious professional accounting qualification, designed to develop business leaders capable of creating sustainable value across all industries. Its core development philosophy is rooted in SAICA’s “Competency Framework for the Chartered Accountant of the Future” (CA of the Future Competency Framework), which requires certificate holders to integrate professional values and attitudes, empowering business acumen, and technical capabilities. They must apply cross-disciplinary, integrative thinking to design solutions and make responsible decisions. Evolution of the Three Major South African Institute of Chartered Accountants Certificate Systems
CA(SA) is the highest-level strategic qualification under SAICA, situated within a comprehensive career development framework. At the bottom is the Accounting Technician (AT(SA)), followed by the Associate General Accountant (AGA(SA)), with CA(SA) at the pinnacle. Unlike ACCA’s global focus, CA(SA) places greater emphasis on cultivating well-rounded business leaders capable of serving as directors, senior managers, or audit leaders within South Africa and the Commonwealth.
The Three Pillars of the CA(SA) Certification Path
To obtain the CA(SA) qualification, applicants must successfully complete three stages: “academic education—professional competency assessment—practical training.”
| Accreditation Stage | Core Requirements | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Education | SAICA-accredited Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree (NQF Level 7) and CTA or PGDA postgraduate diploma (NQF Level 8) | Must have studied Pure Mathematics at the high school level with a grade of at least 60% |
| Professional Competency Assessment | Pass the Initial Assessment of Competency (IAC, renamed ITC in 2025) and the Assessment of Professional Competency (APC) | The overall pass rate for the 2025 IAC was 76% |
| Practical Training | Completion of at least a 3- to 5-year SAICA-approved training contract | The training office must be headed by a certified CA(SA) acting as the training supervisor |
The IAC is a Category 1 professional competency test that primarily assesses core competencies. Starting in 2025, it will be fully transitioned into the “Future Chartered Accountant Competency Framework.” The first-time pass rate jumped from 61% last year to 76%, clearly demonstrating the tremendous success of SAICA’s exam preparation programs. In the IAC exam held in January 2026, 249 candidates from the University of Johannesburg alone passed, with a first-time pass rate as high as 86%, consistently highlighting the strong capabilities of South Africa’s top universities in cultivating accounting talent.
Career Advantages and Salary Levels
CA(SA) charterholders enjoy a wide range of career options, spanning auditing and assurance, taxation, financial operations, information technology, forensic accounting, insolvency and liquidation, academia, the public sector, and non-governmental organizations. Approximately one-third of the CEOs of the top 40 companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) are CA(SA) charterholders, and 74% of the CFOs of the top 200 JSE-listed companies also come from the CA(SA) community. This demonstrates the high value placed on the business leadership capabilities associated with this qualification.
In terms of compensation, graduates who have completed their training contracts and hold a degree recognized by SAICA can earn a starting salary of up to 322,800 rand per year (approximately 125,000 RMB), while senior chartered accountants can earn monthly salaries ranging from 30,000 to 80,000 rand.
International Recognition and Reciprocity Agreements
The CA(SA) qualification achieves international portability through reciprocity agreements signed with leading global accounting bodies. In 2020, SAICA signed mutual recognition agreements with the AICPA and NASBA. CA(SA) holders can utilize these agreements to apply for a U.S. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. In EU countries such as the Netherlands, CA(SA) qualifications are subject to a simplified recognition process; applicants need only submit an application form and relevant supporting documents to be included in the local professional competency assessment.
