The CFA Institute, founded in 1947 and headquartered in the United States, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the financial education of investment professionals. Its Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is currently the most prestigious certification in the global financial investment industry and is regarded as the “premier professional qualification.” There are over 200,000 CFA charterholders worldwide, spread across 162 countries and regions. In China, there are fewer than 20,000 CFA charterholders, making them a highly scarce talent pool. The average monthly salary is approximately 209,000 yuan, which is 63% higher than that of the average finance professional; charterholders typically hold high-paying positions such as investment research analysts and fund managers at major financial institutions in sectors including investment firms, mutual funds, banks, securities, insurance, multinational corporations, and accounting firms. The CFA designation is a powerful tool for career advancement and salary increases in investment-related roles. It takes a lot of effort to earn a CFA Institute Certificate
Exam Structure: Three Progressive Levels
The CFA program is divided into three levels, which candidates must pass sequentially. Each level builds upon the previous one, with difficulty increasing progressively:
Level I emphasizes breadth, assessing foundational knowledge and tools in finance and investment. The exam covers 10 subjects: Ethics and Professional Standards, Quantitative Analysis, Economics, Financial Statement Analysis, Corporate Issuers, Equity Investments, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Alternative Investments, and Portfolio Management. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions, totaling 180 items.
Level II emphasizes depth, focusing on asset valuation and the application of investment tools. It primarily consists of case analysis questions, totaling 120 items.
Level III emphasizes comprehensive application, requiring candidates to demonstrate practical skills in portfolio management and wealth planning. It introduces essay-style questions in English for the first time, testing not only knowledge mastery but also logical expression and practical thinking.
According to the latest data released by the CFA Institute, the pass rate for first-time Level I candidates in February 2026 was 50%, with an overall pass rate of 45%. Looking at the historical average over the past 15 years, the pass rate for Level I is approximately 37%–41%, for Level II approximately 44%–45%, and for Level III approximately 50%–52%.
Salary Advantages and Policy Benefits
CFA charterholders enjoy a significant salary premium. According to data, the average annual salary is approximately $180,000. In China, the average monthly salary is around 450,000 yuan, representing an average premium of 58% compared to general finance professionals. Policy support includes various regions listing the CFA as part of their talent recruitment programs, allowing holders to enjoy preferential policies such as personal income tax subsidies and housing subsidies.
How Much Knowledge Is Required to Obtain the CFA Certification?
The knowledge required to pass the CFA exam is comparable to the full curriculum of a master’s degree in finance: ethics, investment instruments (bonds, equities, derivatives), valuation (mathematics, finance, economics, financial instruments), and portfolio management. There are ten courses in total, covering over 4,000 knowledge points, which encompass virtually every aspect of financial investment. The three levels—from introductory to advanced—progress sequentially: Level I involves a large volume of knowledge points and focuses primarily on memorization; Level II increases in difficulty and emphasizes analysis; Level III becomes even more challenging and focuses on decision-making and writing. The official recommendation is to study for at least 300 hours per level, totaling 303, 328, and 344 hours respectively—over 1,000 hours in total. It is a test of physical stamina, perseverance, and mental endurance!
