Camosun College is a public secondary education community college in Victoria, British Columbia,Canada, founded in 1971, with two campuses, Dublin and Intercity. As a sister college of the University of Victoria, Camosun College is only 10 minutes away from the main campus by bus.
Creating a Canadian University Diploma Step by Step
Location: An Academic Oasis in a Garden City
Camosun College has two main campuses: the Lansdowne Campus is located in the center of Victoria, within walking distance of the bay and historic buildings; the Interurban Campus is hidden in the suburbs among forests and trails, providing a quiet learning The Interurban Campus is tucked away in the suburbs amongst forests and walking trails, providing a peaceful learning environment. Victoria is known as the “Garden City of Canada”, with a mild climate throughout the year, very little snowfall in winter and an average temperature of 25℃ in summer. Outdoor activities are abundant, ranging from whale-watching, golfing to hiking and mountaineering, which creates a natural classroom for students to live and learn.
Academic Strength: 160+ Courses Covering All Fields, Engineering Labs Comparable to Industry Benchmarks
Camosun offers more than 160 degree, diploma and certificate programs covering six major fields, including business, engineering, health sciences, arts and humanities. Its ace majors include:
- Engineering Technology: With the largest engineering lab in B.C., equipped with automation systems, 3D printing equipment and other cutting-edge facilities, and seamless integration with UBC (University of British Columbia) programs, Camosun is known as the “Cradle of Engineers” in the industry.
- Health Sciences: Nursing, Human Kinetics and other programs offer clinical internships in deep collaboration with local medical institutions.
- Co-op: Accounting, finance and other majors can accumulate work experience through the university-enterprise cooperation program, and the employment rate is as high as 91%.
The College has signed transfer credit agreements with UBC, University of Victoria (UVic), Simon Fraser University (SFU) and other prestigious universities. After completing their freshman or sophomore year, students can transfer directly to the partner universities to complete the remainder of their studies, and ultimately obtain the exact same degree certificate as directly admitted students. Data show that every year about 800 students successfully transfer from Camosun to UVic, and the success rate of transferring engineering majors is nearly 100%.
Teaching Characteristics: Small Classes + Practical, avoiding the trap of “elimination rate of large classes”.
Unlike the ladder classrooms of UBC and other famous schools, Camosun insists on small class teaching, with only 24-40 students in each class, and a teacher-student ratio of 1:15. This mode not only allows students to get more personalized guidance, but also significantly improves their grades – for example, the pass rate of engineering courses is 40% higher than that of UBC’s direct admissions and the tuition fee is only 1/3 to 1/3 of that of a comprehensive university. The College emphasizes the importance of “learning by doing”.
The College emphasizes “learning by doing,” with labs designed to simulate real-world workplace environments. For example, civil engineering students are required to complete structural tests in full-size building models, while computer science majors work with local technology companies to develop software projects. This kind of “real-world” teaching enables students to quickly adapt to the demands of the workplace after graduation.
International Student Support: Multicultural Community and Comprehensive Services
Each year, Camosun enrolls more than 850 international students from more than 50 countries, and provides ESL language courses, academic tutoring, and homestay matching services. The College has a “twinning” program to help new students quickly assimilate into Canadian culture. In addition, international students can apply for scholarships that cover 10-30% of tuition.
For students who do not meet the language requirements, the College offers a flexible dual-enrollment policy: they can take ESL courses without IELTS/TOEFL scores, and then enter the professional program directly after passing the internal test.
Transfer Path: The Golden Formula from Camosun to UBC/UVic
Taking engineering as an example, students need to complete freshman courses (calculus, physics, programming, etc.) at Camosun and achieve a GPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0) to get “guaranteed admission” to UBC. The advantages of this pathway are
- Lower cost: save about 40% on the first two years of tuition;
- Less stress: avoid the high elimination rate of UBC’s first-year “killer classes”;
- Better resources: small class teaching + one-on-one tutoring by professors, more significant improvement in grades.
