Historical Origins and Founding Background
The story of Brock University began in 1957, when the Ellenberg Women’s Institute petitioned the Ontario government to establish a university in Niagara so that local residents could attend college close to home. After several years of planning, Brock University officially opened its doors in September 1964, with 127 students studying in a former refrigerator factory. The university was named after Sir Isaac Brook, a hero of the War of 1812. Forty-five years later, Brock University has produced over 119,000 graduates and is one of the universities in Ontario with the highest graduate employment rates.
