Certification System and Global Recognition
AFA’s core curriculum centers on two nationally recognized qualifications, forming a clear career progression pathway:
SIS30321—Certificate III in Fitness: This serves as the entry point into the fitness industry. The course covers health and fitness assessment, designing personalized fitness plans, exercise analysis, and group exercise instruction. Upon obtaining this qualification, graduates can begin their careers as fitness instructors or group exercise instructors at gyms.
SIS40221 — Certificate IV in Fitness: This is an advanced version of the Certificate III, designed for students aspiring to become personal trainers. It consists of eight modules covering applied nutrition, personal training methods, strength and conditioning for athletes, business operations, and marketing. Upon graduation, students can work independently as one-on-one personal trainers and possess the basic business skills to establish their own personal training companies.
AFA’s partnership with FITREC (Fitness Professionals Registration Council) is the core driver behind the international recognition of AFA certificates. Students receive complimentary student registration services during their studies. Upon graduation, they gain international recognition and portability through FITREC’s global registration system, ensuring that AFA graduates’ qualifications are not limited to Australia but are recognized by industry employers worldwide.
Study Modes and Entry Requirements
AFA offers three flexible learning options to accommodate varying lifestyle and work demands. The online self-paced program allows students to complete coursework from anywhere at their own pace; the Certificate III can be completed over a period of up to 12 months, while the Certificate IV can be extended by an additional 12 months, making it ideal for students balancing current employment. The Melbourne classroom-based program offers both full-time and part-time options, with full-time classes held twice a week at the Melbourne campus.
Both the Certificate III and Certificate IV programs take 14 weeks to complete. Part-time courses are scheduled in the evenings and on weekends and also last 14 weeks. Additionally, AFA provides students with practical work placement opportunities. Certificate III and Certificate IV students must complete 32 and 30 hours of practical training, respectively, transforming their theoretical knowledge into practical teaching skills under the guidance of certified personal trainers.
Regarding admission requirements, Certificate III applicants must be at least 18 years old and have an English proficiency level of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent; Certificate IV applicants must hold a Certificate III qualification prior to enrollment. AFA offers a flexible, interest-free installment plan, requiring only a $100 down payment followed by weekly payments of $50, significantly reducing the financial burden on students.
Important Note: AFA is not registered with CRICOS, so it is not suitable for international applicants studying in Australia on a student visa. International students planning to study in Australia should first check the CRICOS website to confirm whether this course is available for international enrollment.
Career Prospects and Professional Support
AFA has established a network of partnerships with numerous companies in the fitness and health sector, providing graduates with practical job opportunities and career development pathways. Graduates can pursue roles such as fitness instructors, group exercise instructors, personal trainers, and strength and conditioning coaches. According to official AFA data, upon obtaining a Certificate IV, graduates can establish their own training brands and practice independently. The institution’s graduate employment rate has consistently been high, with students entering the fitness industry shortly after graduation and enjoying strong salary competitiveness.
