A “Small but Beautiful” University Is Revolutionizing Undergraduate Education in the U.S.
In early 2026, the University of Northern Iowa received official approval from the Higher Learning Commission to launch a revolutionary initiative: the 90-credit Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
In the U.S., traditional undergraduate degrees typically require 120 credits and take four years to complete. UIU’s new program, however, requires only 90 credits—allowing students to graduate a year early and save a full year’s worth of tuition and living expenses. What does this mean? It means a student can earn a degree in three years, enter the workforce sooner, or use the money saved to pursue further education.
This isn’t simply a matter of “lightening the load”; it’s a carefully designed curriculum overhaul. The 90-credit degree retains all core course requirements: 30 upper-division credits, general education courses, and core business courses—nothing is left out. Students are still required to complete all mandatory courses; only the elective courses used merely to “pad the credit count” have been eliminated, making the curriculum more focused and efficient.
The University of Iowa thus became one of the first universities in the U.S. to offer an “accelerated bachelor’s degree.” This initiative directly addresses the concerns that matter most to today’s students: high tuition, lengthy programs, and slow graduation.
Three Pathways, Allowing Students to Set Their Own Pace
UIU’s business programs now offer three learning pathways, allowing students to choose flexibly based on their individual circumstances:
Traditional 120-Credit Degree: Suitable for students who want to pursue a double major, a minor, or are still exploring their academic direction.
90-Credit Degree: Ideal for students who have already identified their business focus and wish to graduate faster and more affordably. Starting in May 2026, online students can choose this path; in the fall semester, students at the Fayette campus will also be able to enroll.
Bachelor’s-to-Master’s Track (BSBA+MBA): Students can earn up to 12 MBA credits during their undergraduate studies, allowing them to complete both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in approximately four years. This track is particularly well-suited for student-athletes, high-achieving students, and working professionals.
Rankings and Strengths: Low-Key but Solid
The University of Northern Iowa ranks 145th–160th among regional universities in the Midwest in the 2026 U.S. News rankings, and 65th among “Best Colleges for Social Mobility”—a ranking that measures a university’s ability to help students from low-income families complete their degrees. The Long-Term Returns on An American College Degree
The university currently has approximately 3,054 undergraduate students, with a student-to-faculty ratio of 25:1, and 72% of classes have fewer than 20 students. This means that at UIU, you’re unlikely to be “the one who gets overlooked in class.”
Popular Majors and Graduate Salaries
Below are UIU’s most popular undergraduate majors and their graduate salary performance:
Major Percentage of Graduates Median Starting Salary
- Business Administration 23% $66,929
- Psychology 12% $50,014
- Nursing 8% $78,287
- Elementary Education 8% $46,694
- Public Service 6% $44,527
Nursing graduates earn a starting salary of nearly $80,000, which is highly competitive in the Midwest. Business Administration graduates also start at over $66,000—proving that while this university may be “understated,” its graduates’ earnings are anything but.
The “Hidden Champion” of Online Education
Another underrated strength of the University of Northern Iowa is its online education. It was one of the first U.S. universities to establish distance learning programs and has since developed a mature online learning system.
UIU’s online master’s programs are ranked 180th in the U.S. by U.S. News. The programs offer seven specializations, including Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Special Education, and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Tuition is just $342 per credit hour; with a total of 36 credits required for the master’s degree, the total cost is approximately $12,000—one of the lowest prices among private universities in the U.S.
The online course structure is also highly flexible: there are six enrollment periods per semester, allowing students to start at any time of the year; courses follow an 8-week format, and students take only two courses at a time, reducing stress; all classes are recorded and archived for convenient review at any time. An MBA student commented: “I work during the day and start studying after putting my kids to bed at night, but I’ve never missed any content.”
