In 1632, when Amsterdam was still merely a trading hub during the Age of Discovery, a group of scholars founded the Athenaeum Illustre—the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam—in a monastery in the city center. Nearly four centuries later, the university has grown into a comprehensive research university ranked among the top 20 in Europe and 53rd globally (2026 QS Rankings), with US News ranking it 33rd worldwide.
The UvA takes particular pride in its Communication program—which has consistently held the top spot globally for many years. The Alma Mater of Python’s Creator
Among the UvA’s alumni is a name familiar to nearly every programmer—Guido van Rossum, the creator of the Python programming language. Tuition and Application: A Cost-Effective European Choice
Compared to the UK and the US, UvA’s tuition is remarkably affordable. Tuition for non-EU undergraduate students ranges from approximately €13,000 to €16,000 per year (about 100,000–125,000 RMB), while master’s programs cost around €16,000 to €22,000 per year. When combined with annual living expenses of approximately €12,000 to €15,000, the total annual cost amounts to roughly 200,000–300,000 RMB—roughly half the cost of studying in the UK or the US.
