DBU and the UEFA Certification System
The Danish Football Association (DBU) was founded in 1889 and joined UEFA in 1954. It is responsible for managing and promoting football leagues at all levels in Denmark. The UEFA coaching certification system is divided into four levels: C, B, A, and Pro. National football associations issue these certifications according to the same criteria, and they must be renewed every three years.
| Level | Coaching Qualification | Typical Roles |
|---|---|---|
| UEFA C Diploma | Grassroots and youth development coaches | Community soccer, children’s training camps |
| UEFA B Diploma | Head coach of amateur teams, assistant coach of professional teams, head coach of youth teams under U16 | Local clubs, youth development assistant |
| UEFA A Diploma | Head coach of second-tier professional leagues, head coach of top-tier league reserve teams, head coach of youth teams under U18 | Danish Superliga, professional youth teams |
| UEFA Pro License | Top-tier league head coaches, head coaches for Champions League and Europa League | Danish Superliga, national team coaches |
Holders of the A-Level coaching license are eligible to serve as head coaches for youth teams at the U18 level and below, top-tier club reserve teams, and men’s second-tier professional leagues. The Pro License is the highest-level certification; applicants must first obtain the A-Level license and have at least one year of coaching experience in the top-tier league. It is designed to develop talent capable of serving as head coaches for top-tier professional club first teams and national teams. Requirements for Attaining a UEFA diploma
DBU’s Unique Training Philosophy
DBU’s coaching training system is known as the “Football Education Pyramid,” encompassing everyone from community volunteers to professional club coaches. Its most distinctive feature is the integration of subjects such as child psychology and developmental education into courses at all levels. Certified coaches are required to complete at least 36 hours of continuing education annually, covering a wide range of topics from cutting-edge sports science to digital literacy.
DBU is also actively engaged in international cooperation. Danish coaching staff have participated in the “Coaches Academy” program at Sevilla FC’s Innovation Center, delving deeply into tactical analysis and training methods of top La Liga clubs. Within the broader framework of UEFA, coaches can take part in cross-border exchange activities to gain immersive professional development experiences, which has allowed the Danish Football Association to maintain a leading position in European coaching education.
How to Obtain the Certificate and Its Value
Coaches must start at the C-level and apply for higher levels step by step, all the way up to the Chinese Football Association. Major topics at the Pro level include tactical planning, sports psychology,
club strategic management, and media relations. This certification serves as the legal prerequisite for becoming a coach in Europe’s top leagues. Since 2010, top European leagues such as the Premier League and the Danish Superliga have implemented a licensing system, requiring all first-team head coaches to hold a UEFA Pro License. Additionally, the UEFA Pro License is mandatory for coaching in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
